Choosing
the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions
that parents may ever make. The process can often be daunting and can
cause hours of agonising over websites, prospectuses and other sources
of information. Even then parents can never be sure that they have got
it right, until their child emerges intact and smiling from the other
end of their school years.
|
How
much more difficult is it then, to choose a school in a foreign country, where
even the early years reading literature is alien to you. This newsletter aims
to at least reassure parents that there is a good choice of schooling in the
UK, and hopefully assist in the decision making process.
Arm
yourself with information
|
Once an international
assignment has been accepted the transferee has to find somewhere to live,
and schools for their children. It can be a bit of a chicken and egg situation
in that it is difficult to choose an area to live in without knowing what
schools the children are to attend, and it is equally difficult
to choose a school without knowing where you are going to live.
|
 |
Obviously
there has to be some sort of melding of the two ideals to achieve the optimum
result. As with all major decisions, the more knowledge you are armed with,
the more likely you are to be confident that the choices you have made are well
informed and well researched.

Ask
the questions
If you are not
sure what type of education would be best for your child there are a few considerations
that may help you to come to a decision. The length of your assignment may have
a bearing on the type of school that you choose.
|
Consider
the age at which your child will start and finish their education in the
UK. What is their educational history, what stage are they at and where
will they fit in best? At what stage will their education be at the end
of the assignment, and where do you anticipate the family will move to
next? What are the requirements for the next stage of their education,
and where can these requirements best be achieved in the UK?
|
 |
What do you want,
what does your child want and what can you do about it?
|
There are
three main types of International School in the UK, those that offer an
American curriculum and High School Diploma, those that offer the International
Baccalaureate, and foreign language schools that teach the curriculum
and language of the home country.
If your child
is to progress to an American college or university and you wish them
to graduate with a high school diploma, then one of the American schools
would probably be your first choice.
|
If you would like
your child to have the option of a university education anywhere in the world,
including the UK or the USA, then you may wish to consider a school that offers
the International Baccalaureate.
Finally, if you
are returning to your home country before your child finishes their education,
you may wish to place them into a school that offers the same curriculum as
your home country. English may not be your first language and you may wish to
choose a school that will teach your child in their mother tongue.
