General Information
These general information sections on our website provide essential information for parents. Compulsory School AgeBy law, all children of compulsory school age (between 5 and 16) must get a proper full-time education. School TermsThe school year is from September to middle of July and is currently divided into three terms. There is a 6 week break between school years. The term dates are recommended by the Department for Education and Skills but schools and local education authorities are free to have slight variations. School Curriculum & ExaminationsAll mainstream schools (but NOT International Schools) have to follow the National Curriculum which is divided into four key stages relevant to each age group. The core subjects are English and Mathematics. Science is included for stages 2 and 3. Nursery SchoolsThis section is aimed at parents who require nursery or child care services for their pre-school age children. Special Needs EducationMost children in the UK with Special Needs are educated in mainstream state or independent schools but there is a range of schools in the UK for those who require more specialised education. This section explores the choices available. School Travel & TransportOnly provided for children who are attending their nearest suitable school which is more than 2 miles (primary school) or 3 miles (senior school) from their home.
